Up Close and Personal"

(Presentation via Zoom)

Johanna Neuman, one of the nation's top historians of women's suffrage, will delve into the strategies and tactics that made their movement successful ultimately and remain relevant to this day. Her new book, And Yet They Persisted: How American Women Won the Right to Vote, traces the history of women’s suffrage over two centuries, expanding our understanding of how long this reform took and restoring African American women to the suffrage narrative.

A former Nieman Fellow at Harvard, she holds a M.A. in journalism from the University of Southern California and a M.A. and Ph.D. in history from American University.

Harvard’s Schlesinger Library holds a vast collection of documents related to the women’s suffrage movement. Edna Lamprey Stantial helped Maud Wood Park (Radcliffe 1898) gather the material that became the Women's Rights Collection, the seed from which the Schlesinger Library grew.
